WAILUKU - Home bakers can contribute local goodies and Japanese desserts to the "Maui Bake Sale for Japan" April 2.
Organizers also seek volunteers to help with the effort.
The event will sell the treats that day at two sites: the Maui County Agricultural Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu, and the Maui Swap Meet from 7 a.m. to noon at the University of Hawaii Maui College in Kahului.
Proceeds will benefit Peace Winds Japan, a disaster-response group providing medical supplies, clothing and restoration materials to victims of the Japan tsunami. The group is affiliated with the nonprofit Peace Winds America. Donations are tax deductible, a release said.
Baked goods being sold will include 100 award-winning pineapple mini upside-down cakes from Pineapple Grill, plus other confections from local bakeries and restaurants. There also be will items - such as cookies, pies, mochi and haupia - from home cooks.
Volunteers are needed to help pick up donated goods before the event. Bakers also may deliver their donations to the site on the event day.
