Slurp-y spread

A foodblogger has a delightful romp in the Klang Valley, slurping up cool desserts and hot soups.

TIMOTHY Low enjoys taking photographs as much as he loves good food. So it is hardly surprising that he started a food blog the same time he bought his first digital camera.

His food blog, 3-meals.com, has been around for five years and Low, a real estate agent by profession, is never short of new food places to try and write about.

Tantalising mix: Snowflake?s Grass Jelly Ice Series with Red Beans, Taroballs and Pearl Jellies

?It has become a passion for me. As long as I have my digital camera and my faithful laptop that allows me to blog virtually anywhere, I will continue to churn out more food articles,? he says.

His latest discovery is Snowflake ? a Taiwanese dessert restaurant in Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, Selangor.

?I am not exactly a fan of desserts, especially ones that have bubbly, pearly bits in them. And I wouldn?t be caught dead sucking those black pearly stuff through gigantic straws. Nope, not me!? he writes.

?Then one day, I came across Snowflake ... Who would have thought a simple dessert made from ice shavings, beans, sweet potatoes as well as pearl jellies would have made such an impression on me??

Low admits feeling a ?bit old? at Snowflake which is very popular with teenagers. But he believes one should give it a try, even if you are not a fan of pearl jellies.

?If you like it, then you will want more. If not, at least you have tried it and can join in the conversation with your friends if someone talks about it.?

His food hunt recently landed him in a Seri Kembangan restaurant serving ?hot? soup or Sup Pedas. Located behind a post office, Restoran Kien Kee in Seri Kembangan is famous in the locality for its Sup Pedas Ayam Kampung.

?The soup is spicy enough to tingle your senses but not burn your mouth. The sweetness comes from the assortment of pork innards,? he says.

He also recommends their Fa Tiu Chicken. Served in a claypot, the tender chicken pieces are coated with a thick and slightly sweet soy sauce, which goes well with a bowl of white rice. The addition of ?Fa Tiu? wine just before serving gives the dish an aromatic flavour.

Spicy and nice: Restoran Yu Ai in Segambut.

Restoran Kien Kee is located at D-1, Jalan 10/3, Seri Kembangan (GPS coordinates N 3 1.332 E 101 42.29099) and is closed on Mondays.

And if you ever find yourself in the Segambut area and feeling peckish, Low suggests trying the seafood or fish nead noodles at Restoran Yu Ai.

The restaurant is located in the small/medium industrial area and is just a stone?s throw away from Mont Kiara/Solaris.

?When you step into the outlet, you?ll be greeted by rows of seafood noodle condiments and gigantic pots of soup bases. You can choose your soup (plain, curry or tom yam), noodles and seafood.

?If you choose tom yam soup, brace yourself as it is quite strong. You can also mix and match the variety of seafood.?

Be prepared to pay a price for the food, though. A large bowl of seafood noodles will set you back RM17 while the small one costs RM15 a bowl.

?It might be a little pricey for many but if the place is still packed during meal times, who is complaining?? Low adds.

Restoran Yu Ai is located at 42, Jalan Segambut Utara, Kuala Lumpur and is open from 8am to 5pm. They also have another branch in SS2 located at 58, Jalan SS2/10, Petaling Jaya.
