A packaging material that's been next to impossible to recycle is finally getting its just desserts.
Styrofoam, the ubiquitous white rigid polystyrene?plastic foam that's used to protect and steady everything from?boxed big-screen TVs and coffeemakers,?will be collected by the city of Madison for the first time on Saturday.
The Styrofoam recycling runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the city transfer station, 121 E. Olin Ave., according to a news release from the Madison Streets Division.
The collected Styrofoam will be turned over to Uniek Inc., a Waunakee picture frame and wall decor maker.
"Uniek will take the collected Styrofoam and reprocess it into material they can use to make picture frames," said city recycling coordinator George Dreckmann. "Madison is one of three collection sites in the U.S. partnering with Uniek to utilize otherwise landfill-bound Styrofoam."
The Styrofoam recycling day will only?accept block polystyrene packaging material, the bulky polystyrene that is used around computers, electronics, and other items, and will?not accept packing peanuts.
(Shipping services, such as the UPS Store, will accept packing peanuts).
