St. Mary’s athletes honored

The girls varsity was 9-16 overall and 6-10 in conference play. Coach Bruce Woitas said, “we lost a lot of close games in the beginning of the season.” A big thank you went out to the statisticians, Sam Sellner, Kari Jo Riederer and Serena Rubey, because they have been with the team their whole high school career. Dean Stimpert and Dan Tauer also helped to coach the girls’ teams this year. Woitas also thanked the seniors for their leadership this season. “We were probably the team no one wanted to play,” said coach Woitas. The girl’s b-squad team ended with a 16-6 overall record for the season.

The letter winners included? Maddy Helget, Jenna Hose, Angie Lax, Ellen Mathiowetz, Marisa Moldan, Molly Moldan, Anna Surprenant, Kenzie Schutz and Allison Woitas. The non- letter winners received a gift card for their efforts.
The team awards were given to the following: Helget for Most Improved Player; Surprenant was given the Leadership award; Tauer received Most Valuable Player and Woitas was the Defensive Most Valuable Player. The boy’s b-squad team? started the season out, a little unsure of how it might go. They won nine of their games this year. Coach Scott DeMaris said, “I thought I was being realistic, when I thought we could win at least one game.”
They had real close games this season, especially two that went into overtime. “I’m looking forward to next year, we can work on more fundamentals,” said coach DeMaris.
As for the boys varsity team, coach Tim Milliard wanted to “thank parents for their flexibility with the long season of scheduling everything.” He also explained that this has been one of the worst years that he has dealt with that.
“This group is a solid, good group of guys, they enjoy basketball.” said coach Milliard.
The last two years, the boys have been sheeted out? of b-squad and they handled it really well, they weren’t all ready for varsity,” said coach Milliard. Now the basketball program can get back to a normal year, next year. They were seeded ninth last year and moved up to the fifth seed this season. Their goal is to take the fourth seed next season.
