Beverly businesses bake to fight breast cancer

During the week leading up to Mother’s Day, May 2 to 8, more than 250 restaurants, bakeries, cafes and chocolate shops throughout Massachusetts will participate in Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer by preparing unique desserts. Desserts start at $3, and 100 percent of sales will benefit breast cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Participating Beverly businesses include Cassis Bakery, 261 Cabot St., and Not Your Average Joe’s, 45 Enon St. The dessert at Not Your Average Joe’s will be strawberry shortcake made up of a house-made shortcake biscuit filled with macerated strawberries and ice cream.

“Despite all of our advances in detection and treatment, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women,” said Eric Winer, M.D., chief of the division of women’s cancer and Thompson senior investigator in breast cancer research at the Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at Dana-Farber. “Fortunately, thanks in part to funds raised from Boston Bakes, we are conducting laboratory and clinical research that is focused on enhancing our understanding of what causes breast cancer, developing better diagnostic tools and making treatments more effective with the overall goal of curing, if not out right preventing, breast cancer."

The 12th annual Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer is dedicated to Colleen Horan O’Farrell, who passed away at age 39 from triple negative breast cancer in January 2010. Colleen was a member of the FOX25 Morning News team and an energizing spirit in the WFXT newsroom for 12 years. Colleen lived in Walpole with her husband, Peter and their two children.??

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer was started in 2000 by Carol Brownman Sneider in memory of her mother, Eva Brownman, who lost her battle with breast cancer. Since its inception the event has raised more than $500,000 for breast cancer research and care at Dana-Farber one sweet at a time.
