Robert and Lena Yarder are Moore County products, both of them. They both graduated from Union Pines High School in Cameron and went on to graduate from Sandhills Community College's Hospitality & Culinary Arts and Culinary Arts program.

Last year, the young couple, both 31, opened Kraz Elegant Cakes at 50 Market Square. The bakery offers cupcakes and any number of pastries and sweets. But the Yarders' principal business is the cakes they bake and intricately decorate.

Even though Robert and Lena went to high school together, it wasn't until years later that they noticed each other. Rather, it was Lena who noticed Robert.

Robert was taking a pastries class at Ironwood Cafe in Pinehurst, where Lena had a job at the time.

Lena thought she recognized Robert, but couldn't remember from where.

He was an aspiring artist and had long hair in high school, longer than hers. At Ironwood, his hair was cropped short.

She walked up to Robert, Lena smiles as she tells the story, and asked where he was from.

Robert, the quiet one, hardly looks up from the fish he is painting onto a bridegroom cake as his wife reminisces.

The rest, as they say, is culinary history.
