Judgment Day? Murders and missing persons? The impending June Gloom? We all need a good laugh and to enjoy the small things in life - like mini cupcakes. Cupcakes & Comedy, a night of female comedians and sweets, hosts its second event of 2011 on Sunday, June 5, at Sweet E's "the mini bake shop" located in Pico-Robertson.

Created by Adria Baratta, actor and stand-up comedian, the show welcomes all genders but features only female comedians. Gentlemen, no need to yank out your crumpled sexist cards; the host is male. The lineup includes Stephanie Simbari, Melinda Hughes, Kat Ahn, Adria Baratta and your host, Dennis Jacobs. All comedians possess an "unapologetic and endearing" comedic style, says Baratta, who handles all booking.

Tickets are just $7 at the door and include a free mini cupcake. Renowned for its baked goodies, Sweet E's offers a delicious assortment of flavors like Red Velvet, Blue Velvet, Vanilla Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Double Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Key Lime plus several vegan choices. There is something for everyone during this "night of stand-up and dessert," as is printed on the event flier.

Originally from New York, Baratta braved the sprawl last year and landed her first job as driver of the Sweet E's delivery truck. Erica Tucker, owner of Sweet E's, showed interest in Baratta's stand-up work, prompting both women to develop the show idea. The first installment on May 1, 2011 attracted about thirty attendees and entertained wildly.

Though the edible goods are sweet, the audible goods are not. "This is not a family-friendly show," says Baratta. Adding, "In May a customer walked in and caught the tail end of an anal sex joke. Needless to say, she did not purchase any baked goods."

The show kicks off at 6:30pm on Sunday, June 5. Come armed with a sweet tooth and an open mind.
